LisArt - Work Inspired by Musicians & Their Performance

The Foundry Gallery is pleased to present local artist Lis Butcher who will be showing a body of work inspired by musicians and their performance.

While her work is in the current urban, street context popularised by Graffiti artists like Banksy and Nick Walker, and also reminiscent of pop artists like Warhol and Lichtenstein, the images represent a more developed style all of her own.  Lis’s philosophy has developed from her belief that while music is an art form that people feel they can relate to there is a feeling that visual art is in some way exclusive and distant, and people feel that they may not understand what is being said.  Lis avoids the complicated and complex in favour of simplicity with all the unnecessary information eliminated from the finished work.

With newspaper images as her inspiration, blending in classic wallpaper or fabric patterns, and loosely filing the works with colour blocks and surface pattern the overall effect is incredibly stimulating.

The subjects of the works are not always famous; some are local, small bands, and this combined with the minimalism of the central subject ensure that some of the works are not instantly recognisable.  This provides a challenge to the viewer – Do I know who this is? What does it feel like to be there?  Is this person important?

Lis is excited to be exhibiting her art works at The Foundry after successful exhibitions in Tottenham and Harrogate:

"I hope that the images I produce trigger some of these questions and are as entertaining and though provoking as the music itself.”

The art of Lis Butcher will be on display at The Foundry from Tuesday, 15th April 2008.  For a preview of the exhibition go to www.thefoundrywrexham.co.uk  or to register for a place on the guest list please contact:
